November is Adoption Awareness Month

One of the cornerstones of our mission at Alabama CASA Network is to strive for permanency for the children we serve. Permanency looks different for every case. For some children, this looks like reunification with their birth parent(s) and for others it looks like a permanent relative placement or adoption out of foster care. We wholeheartedly believe that children deserve to grow in up in a stable environment, and striving for permanency helps achieve that goal.

At any given time in the state of Alabama, hundreds of children in foster care are awaiting a loving and caring adoptive home. Many have never felt the warmth and joy that comes from a forever family. Most have been placed in agency custody due to parental neglect or physical abuse. The good news is that the lives of these children can be brightened forever by just one person - you.

By adopting a child, you not only help a child grow up in a loving and caring environment, you share in the vision of a bright, positive future. Adoption not only enriches the life of a child, but enriches yours as well. The Department of Human Resources recruits and prepares families willing to open their hearts and homes to waiting children.
— Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR)

At any given time in Alabama, there are hundreds of children who are currently in foster care and who are ready and waiting to be adopted. While not every family has the resources to adopt, something that we've learned is that we can all do SOMETHING.

This month alone will bring several ways to help us raise awareness about the need for adoptive families in our state. Here are ways for you to get involved:

ORPHAN SUNDAY: November 13, 2016

On Orphan Sunday, Christians stand for the orphan. We are a people called to defend the fatherless…to care for the child who has no family…to visit orphans in their distress. Each event is locally-led. Sermons and small groups, concerts and prayer gatherings, shared meals and youth activities—each rousing believers with God’s call to care for the orphan and what we can do in response.

Alabama CASA would be happy to provide materials to your church to display on Orphan Sunday. If you would like to find out how you can bring CASA to your church, click here. To find out more about Orphan Sunday, visit the Christian Alliance for Orphans website here.

NATIONAL ADOPTION DAY: November 19, 2016

National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families. A coalition of national partners – Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, The Alliance for Children’s Rights and Children’s Action Network – sponsor National Adoption Day.

This annual, one-day event has made the dreams of thousands of children come true by working with policymakers, practitioners and advocates to finalize adoptions, and create and celebrate adoptive families.

Communities across the county celebrate every Saturday before Thanksgiving.

If you would like to find out how to host an Adoption Day event, visit the National Adoption Day website here.
