Our October Volunteer Spotlight goes to Patti Joyner! Heres what Patti has to say about being a CASA:

"I am Patti Joyner. A Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Auburn Alum, Maker, Painter, Cook. We moved to Auburn in March 2018 where we intend to retire. I heard about CASA while volunteering, then eventually, serving on the board of Child Protect, a child advocacy center in Montgomery, AL. The was no CASA program in Montgomery County at the time, but I knew there was one in Lee County.

When we decided to make the move I signed up for the training. I was sworn in in October 2018. Once you become involved in child welfare there is just no turning back. These children pay a heavy price for the knuckle-headed decisions of others. They deserve better. They deserve a team of people who will advocate for them.

During training I read that as a CASA we are probably the only person in their lives that isn’t being paid to look after their best interests. They are always astonished that I would keep showing up for them even though I am not being compensated. It gives you some real credibility with a child whose heart has hardened because of the insecurity and chaos of the life they know. It can be frustrating but it is always gratifying work."

Thank you, Patti, for your commitment to make a difference in the lives of the children we serve!

“In the last four years we’ve had different judges, numerous parent aids, any number of social workers. Every time there’s a change, it’s like we start over again. The new person says, ‘Let’s try this with the mom.’ But I’ve been on this case from the beginning. I can say ‘We tried that two years ago, and it didn’t work.’ It’s been three years now, and these kids can’t wait any more.” - CASA VOLUNTEER
